The Iconic History of the Coral Casino in Montecito

Nestled along the pristine coastline of Montecito, the Coral Casino Beach and Cabana Club stands as one of the most exclusive and historically significant social clubs in California. A symbol of luxury, glamour, and oceanfront leisure, the Coral Casino has been a gathering place for Hollywood elites, business magnates, and local socialites for generations. But beyond its current prestige, the Coral Casino boasts a fascinating history that reflects the evolution of Montecito itself.

A Glamorous Beginning

The Coral Casino was conceived in the 1930s by the visionary developer Frederick Clapp. Recognizing Montecito’s growing reputation as a haven for the affluent, Clapp sought to create a waterfront retreat that embodied elegance and exclusivity. Officially opening its doors in 1937, the club quickly became a destination for the rich and famous, offering unparalleled views of the Pacific Ocean and luxurious amenities that set it apart from any other social club on the West Coast.

Hollywood’s Playground

Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, the Coral Casino solidified its reputation as the ultimate playground for Hollywood’s elite. Stars such as Clark Gable, Charlie Chaplin, and Lana Turner were known to frequent the club, mingling with Santa Barbara’s high society. The club’s Olympic-sized pool, cabanas, and fine dining options made it the perfect retreat for those seeking privacy and relaxation away from the hustle of Los Angeles.

A Changing Landscape

By the 1970s, the Coral Casino experienced shifts in ownership and underwent several renovations. The exclusivity of the club fluctuated during this period, with membership policies evolving to meet the changing times. However, the club never lost its reputation as a symbol of high society and luxury living in Montecito.

A Lavish Restoration

In 2000, Ty Warner, the billionaire entrepreneur behind Beanie Babies and the owner of the nearby Four Seasons Biltmore, acquired the Coral Casino with a vision to restore it to its former glory. After an extensive multi-million-dollar renovation, the club reopened in 2008, seamlessly blending modern luxury with its historic charm. The restoration included upgrades to the pool, cabanas, and dining facilities, ensuring that the club maintained its elite status.

The Coral Casino Today

Today, the Coral Casino Beach and Cabana Club remains an invitation-only retreat, offering members and guests an unparalleled oceanfront experience. With its stunning Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, world-class dining at Tydes Restaurant, and breathtaking views of Butterfly Beach, the club continues to be a symbol of refined coastal living in Montecito.

From its golden era as a celebrity retreat to its modern-day exclusivity, the club remains an iconic landmark. Whether for a swim in its legendary pool or an evening of fine dining by the sea, the Coral Casino continues to be a timeless piece of California’s rich social history.
