This past weekend, I had the privilege of attending the Santa Barbara Museum of Art’s annual Gilded Gala — an unforgettable evening celebrating art, philanthropy, and community. The event raised nearly $1 million in support of the museum’s exhibitions, education programs, and cultural initiatives that serve Santa Barbara and beyond.

The event was co-chaired by Academy Award–nominated actress Zoe Saldaña, whose involvement brought global attention to one of our city’s most important cultural institutions. Also in attendance was Will Ferrell, while his wife, Viveca Paulin-Ferrell, served as one of the evening’s auctioneers, helping energize the room and drive the remarkable fundraising total.

The Power of Art and Community

There’s something powerful about sitting in a room filled with individuals who believe deeply in preserving and advancing the arts. The Santa Barbara Museum of Art has long been a cornerstone of our community — a place where creativity, dialogue, and education intersect.

For many of us, early exposure to art shapes how we see the world. It creates space for expression, reflection, and connection. Events like the Gilded Gala ensure that future generations will continue to have access to those experiences.

More Than a Fundraiser

The evening itself was beautifully curated — refined yet warm, celebratory yet purposeful. It served as a reminder that Santa Barbara’s strength lies not only in its natural beauty and architecture, but in the people who invest in its cultural legacy.

Nearly $1 million raised in a single evening is no small achievement. It speaks to the generosity of this community and the shared belief that art matters.

And that collective commitment — to culture, education, and civic engagement — is part of what continues to make Santa Barbara such an extraordinary place to live.
