Discover "Palacio del Rio," a remarkable historic gentleman’s ranch nestled in a grove of 100-year-old Redwoods, overlooking the picturesque Santa Ynez Valley. This Spanish-style estate, constructed between 1929 and 1938 by esteemed Santa Barbara architect Joseph Plunkett, was originally built for John J. (Jack) Mitchell Jr. and his first wife, Lolita Armour. The property, named "Juan y Lolita Ranchero" after their Christian names, showcases a rich blend of history and elegance.
Mitchell, a former wartime pilot, went on to establish an aviation company that evolved into United Airlines. In his pursuit of a dream ranch, he created this idyllic retreat in the California countryside, complete with a Wild West bar sourced from a Santa Barbara saloon.

In 1930, Mitchell sought to revive the romance and spirit of Old California by organizing the first “Los Rancheros Visitadores,” a historic horseback trek through the California landscape with 65 of his closest friends. Inspired by Elmer Awl and cowboy artist Ed Borein, Mitchell embraced the idea of forming an elite men’s club focused on horseback riding and celebrating the ranching lifestyle. This event revived the hacienda circuit tradition from early California, where ranchers would ride from ranch to ranch to assist neighbors and celebrate.
The success of the Ranchero rodeo led Mitchell to host it annually for 25 years. He became ‘El Presidente’ of the exclusive, invitation-only Los Rancheros Visitadores, with notable attendees such as Clark Gable, Walt Disney (riding his horse, Minnie Mouse), and Apollo astronaut Wally Shirra.

The ride, a revival of early Californian customs, became one of the most exclusive networking opportunities in America, second only to the Bohemian Grove. The 1967 bestseller “Who Rules America” by G. William Dornhoff highlighted the concentration of power among elite members, many of whom were Visitadores-Bohemians, including Ronald Reagan.
Mitchell’s passion for the ride is captured in a 1955 issue of Sports Illustrated, where he emphasized the profound bond formed among participants through shared experiences on horseback. By the 1960s, Mitchell sold the estate to Jimmy Stewart. The property was later owned by Dean Martin and has been parceled off over the years.
Today, the remaining 36.6-acre estate is listed for $12,950,000. The 10,000-square-foot hacienda boasts 6 bedrooms, 6.5 bathrooms, and several reception rooms opening to terraces that extend the living spaces outdoors. The estate includes a 4-bedroom, 2-bathroom guest quarters, an additional 2-bedroom guest house, and a caretaker’s house.

With its stunning valley views, lush landscape, terraces, swimming pool, and tennis court, "Palacio del Rio" offers an unparalleled California lifestyle. The property also features fenced pastures with horse shelters, a riding ring, and a four-stall barn.
Steeped in history and offering a unique living experience, this is truly a once-in-a-lifetime property.
